Pie Crust 101

Happy Wednesday! This week I have set my DVR many times to catch Thanksgiving cooking shows. I try each year to add to or make my Thanksgiving meal better. These cooking shows truly are like a mini classroom in your tv!

I watched Carla Hall (love her) making a pie crust. This is something I used to do many moons ago, make pie crust from scratch! Then children got older, life got busy and I learned of Trader Joe’s frozen pie crust! I still think TJ’s is a good alternative if you don’t have time or don’t wish to attempt crust from scratch. I listened as Carla Hall tried to convince me that this was truly simple. Now when I cook I feel I am sharing my love and truly there is no better way to say I Love You then in a pie! Today I took her recipe and gave it a go! As with all good things, a little preparation and patience goes a long way. This was truly simple and not many ingredients. I need some work on the “pretty” part of the crust but I am going to make my pumpkin pies with this crust AND the very nice thing is… I can make the crust now, like tomorrow, and place it in the pie pan (or leave it in a disc) and place in the freezer (NOT BAKED), super simple!

I hope you will give this a try and come back and let me know how you enjoyed it! Carla did suggest you “blind bake” the crust to avoid a soggy crust. Now I have been baking for a long time and don’t think I have heard this term before (my apologies to my southern friends!) but I did “blind bake it”.  I must say even this seasoned baker learned something new today! A new term and some new tricks for making pie! ENJOY!
